The city Bremerton was plotted in 1891, the same year, the Puget Sound Naval Station was established. The Navy later acquired additional land, expanding to approximately 190 acres of valuable low-bank waterfront property.
The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, initially known as Navy Yard Puget Sound, was the first dry-dock and repair facility in the Northwest capable of handling the largest ships. Work at the shipyard began in 1896, and it quickly became the economic engine driving Bremerton's growth.
Bremerton Is A Vibrant Hub of History, Industry, and Community
Today, Bremerton remains the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula and is home to both the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Bremerton Annex of Naval Base Kitsap (created in 2004 from the merger of Naval Station Bremerton and Submarine Base Bangor). The shipyard covers 179 acres on Puget Sound and is the Pacific Northwest's largest naval shore facility and one of Washington state's largest industrial installations.
