Port Orchard was originally platted in 1886 on the southern shore of Sinclair Inlet, part of Port Orchard Bay. Port Orchard quickly became known for its lumber industry, pottery works, small businesses, and agricultural opportunities.
One of the most significant developments in Port Orchard’s early history was the establishment of the Puget Sound Naval Station (later renamed the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard) across Sinclair Inlet in what would become Bremerton. Port Orchard began developing modern infrastructure in the early 20th century. The town established its first water system, electric lights and telephone services.

In the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st, Port Orchard continued to evolve while maintaining its connections to both its maritime heritage and its relationship with the naval installations across the inlet. While many residents still work for the shipyard or Naval Base Kitsap, others commute to Seattle and Tacoma for employment.
