Tacoma was incorporated in 1875. Its name is derived by the Native American name for Mount Rainier, the mountain had great spiritual significance to the indigenous peoples of the region. Tacoma's early economy was built on its strategic location and transportation connections. Lumber, coal and wheat. The North End—what was called a "woody wilderness", became thriving neighborhoods connected to downtown and the newly established Point Defiance Park.
As the 19th century gave way to the 20th, distinct architectural styles began defining the North End's character. The neighborhood saw three major building booms. During these periods, the architectural landscape of North Tacoma was shaped by styles popular across America, but with distinct Pacific Northwest interpretations.
Tacoma Living: Where History Meets Home
Early homes featured Victorian-era designs, including Queen Anne and Stick Style houses with their ornate details and asymmetrical forms. As the new century progressed, these gave way to more practical Craftsman bungalows—a distinctly American style that represented a transition from Victorian elaboration to simpler, more functional designs. Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, American Foursquare, and Mission Revival styles also found homes in the growing district.
